Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is common among adults. Gum disease usually develops due to plaque, which can build up on your teeth and lead to gum inflammation. When your gums are inflamed, they can separate from your teeth, causing pockets to appear in between your teeth and your gums. Bacteria thrive in those pockets.

If gum disease is untreated, it can lead to serious oral health issues, and possibly other health conditions, including cardiovascular problems.

Early Signs of Periodontal Disease

Gingivitis is one of the first stages of periodontal disease. Gingivitis can cause your gums to appear red and swollen, and your gums may bleed when you brush or floss. Fortunately, gingivitis is often easily treated with an improved oral hygiene regime and regular dental cleanings.

With gum disease, you may also notice that your gums are receding, that you have bad breath or taste something foul, or that you experience pain during your oral hygiene routine. If you notice any of the signs of gum disease, you should call our office to schedule a consultation.
